The debate between Physical and Chemical Exfoliation is fundamentally about mechanism and control. Physical exfoliation relies on mechanical friction—using particles or tools to physically detach dead skin cells—which offers immediate surface smoothing but carries a higher risk of micro-tears and uneven irritation if pressure is not perfectly calibrated. Chemical exfoliation, utilizing AHAs, BHAs, or PHAs, works by dissolving the "glue" (desmosomes) that holds dead cells together, allowing them to shed in a way that mimics the skin's natural biological process. Because chemical exfoliants can be formulated at specific concentrations and pH levels, they provide a standardized "dosage" that is much easier for a user to replicate safely than the variable pressure of a hand-held scrub. Over an 8 to 12-week period, a well-regulated chemical routine typically results in more stable barrier health, more even light reflection, and a significant reduction in the chronic inflammation often caused by aggressive physical friction.
